Are you a resident in Spain? Exchange your UK driving licence today.
In accordance with the new Royal Decree-Law of 1 March 2019, from the day the United Kingdom withdraws from the European Union, you can continue driving in Spain with your valid UK driving licence if you are a Spanish resident.
However, this will only apply for a period of nine months. During this time, those who meet the requirements may exchange their driving licence under the same conditions provided for permits issued by EU Member States.
This is why we strongly recommend that you change your driving licence as soon as possible: once the nine months have come to an end, the UK driving licence will no longer be treated the same, and third country regulations will apply, meaning a simple exchange won’t be possible until a bilateral convention is signed.
To start the process of exchanging your UK driving licence, you must apply via the DGT (‘Dirección General de Tráfico’). Please note that applications are by appointment only, and due to the high volume of applications the process can take up to three months.
These are the required documents:
- Official application form duly filled in and signed.
- Valid passport and residence card/certificate.
- UK driving licence and counterpart.
- One passport photo.
- Talon foto, duly filled in and signed within the box.
- Sworn declaration duly filled in and signed.
- Medical test.
- Administrative fees.
Hiring international lawyers, who can take care of the application for you, from booking the appointment to submitting the documents and collecting your new driving licence, it’s also highly advisable. That’s one thing less to worry about in the Brexit transition period.
